Professor Jinhyung Park had an interviewed with Chosun Biz by the recommendation of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST), and the article was published online on January 23, 2023. This is the fifth article in Chosun Biz 2023 New Year’s Young Scientist Interview Series [Young Brains Run]. Professor Park together with Professors Lawrence Ein and Wenbo Niu resolved Sidman-Vermeire’s conjecture on the equations defining secant varieties of algebraic curves in 2018, and the result was published in Inventiones Matematicae in 2020. He said that ‘luck’ was a crucial factor in solving this problem, and emphasized the importance of stable research environment for ordinary mathematicians in order for Korean mathematics community to become stronger.
