Abstract: We give a new proof of a Theorem of Jaffe and Taubes which says that the moduli space of vortices of degree d on the cylinder
is given by the d-fold symmetric product of the cylinder. Our proof
uses that vortices on the cylinder can be interpreted as gradient
flow lines of an action functional. Using finite dimensional approximation
techniques we can reduce the problem of finding solutions of a PDE to the problem of finding solutions of an ODE. After studying a further homotopy gradient flow lines will become geometrically visible.
