Oral Enterance Exam for Masters Degree:
One needs to be throughly familiar
with point-set topology. You are expected to know
separation properties, compactnesss, connectedness,
continuity, quotient topology, one-point compactifications.
These are quite a lot of materials for students
from other universities where topology is not taught
at the level of SNU. Helpful books are
as follows:
1. J. Munkres, Topology, a first
course, Prentice Hall
2. J. Kahn, Topology, an introduction
to point-set ..., Williams and Wilkins Company
3. W. Massey, Algebraic Topology,
an introduction, Springer Verlag
Written Enterance Exams for Masters
Degree:
In addition to above materials,
one needs to know fundamental groups, covering spaces,
and the classifications of surfaces. In additon
to above books:
4. R. H. Fox, Introduction to
Knot Theory, Springer Verlag
Note that previous written exams
are available from the mathematics library, where you can make copies.
Written Enterance Exams for Ph.D.
Degrees:
The course work at Master's degee
is very important. Particularly, Algebraic Topolgy
1 and Differentiable manifolds course work should
be thoroughly understood.
Qualifying Exams:
Materials in Topology 1 and Topology
2 in the undergraduate courses and Algebraic Topolgy
1 in the graduate courses. Past exams are very helpful.
