MAS 100: College Mathematics

This is the first mathematics course at KAIST taken by first-year undergraduate studends who enter in the Fall semester. The course gives a rigorous introduction to calculus that emphasizes calculations, examples, solid definitions, and some proof of various mathematical concepts.

Thomas' Calculus; Early transcendentals, 12th edition
Thomas, Weir, Hass

Chapters to be covered:
  1. Functions
  2. Limits and continuity
  3. Differentiation
  4. Applications of derivatives
  5. Integration
  6. Applications of definite integrals
  11. Parametric equations and polar coordinates
(Certain subsections may be omitted due to time constraints)

Suggested problems

Here is a list of exercises from what has been covered in class. This page will be updated weekly.

Try to solve all suggested problems. If there are any you cannot solve, ask the TA during the recitation class.

Recitation classes will be held on Wednesdays 8 - 9 pm, Room 202 (E-11)
It is mandatory to attend the recitation classes. There will be a quiz every week.

Grading

Midterm (35%), Final (35%), Quiz (25%), Class participation (5%)
The final grades are distributed as follows
Total score ≥ 90% ⇒ A
                  ≥ 80% ⇒ B
                  ≥ 70% ⇒ C
(Students who do not take the midterm or final exam will get an F)

Advice

Try to solve the problems in the book. Solve as many as possible, preferably all of them. Calculus requires lots of practice!!
