[이 글은 POW(Problem of the Week) 최우수상 수상자인 퉁 응우옌 학생이 작성했습니다.]
저는 카이스트 수리과학과의 2학년생 퉁 응우옌입니다. 2016년 가을에 입학해서 이제 2년이 되어갑니다. 외국인 학사과정생으로서 나의 느낀 점과 생각을 이렇게 글로 표현하게 되어서 커다란 영광으로 여깁니다. 수학전공자로서 더욱 그렇습니다.
카이스트와 한국에서의 제 수학 인생은 참으로 짜릿합니다. 그 이유를 들면, 첫째로, 수많은 세미나와 학과 초청 강연, 그리고 저명 수학자들의 강연입니다. 학과 교수님들과의 면담을 통해서 뿐 아니라, 해외석학 초청강연 시리즈를 통해서 세계적 대가들로부터 배울 수 있는 기회들이 많았읍니다. 이 대가들 중에는 테리 타오, 조엘 스펜서, 에핌 젤마노프, 강 티안 등이 있었습니다. 학과에서는 또한 타 기관에서 연구자들을 초청해서 교수와 학생 대상으로 강연회를 여는데, 이를 통해서 전 세계적으로 최근의 연구결과와 방법을 접하게 합니다.
둘째 이유로는 강의입니다. 학과에서 개설하는 과목들이 정말로 흥미롭습니다. 교수님이 자세히 설명해주시고 보충설명과 책에 없는 내용까지도 강의해주십니다. 수업시간은 활기차고 학생들의 질문에 교수님이 가능한 명쾌하게 응답하시며 학생들도 항상 서로 도우려고 합니다. 셋째 이유로는, 학사과정생들을 위해서 다양한 수학 프로그램과 경시대회를 통해서 수학 학습을 격려한다는 것입니다. 저는 학과에서 진행하는 금주의 문제(Problem of the Week) 프로그램과 대학생 수학경시대회에 참여해서 추억에 남을만한 시간을 가졌습니다.

I am Tung Nguyen, a rising sophomore in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at KAIST. I came to KAIST in Fall 2016 and has spent nearly two years at the university as well as in Korea. It is my great privilege to express my feelings and thoughts as a foreign student, especially who is majoring in mathematics.
To me, the mathematical life in KAIST and Korea has been truly exciting. Firstly, there are numerous seminars, colloquiums, and lectures from the renowned mathematicians. I have had good chances to meet and learn not only from the professors in the department, but also from some great minds around the world such as Terry Tao, Joel Spencer, Efim Zelmanov, Gang Tian,… in the Distinguished Scholar Lecture Series. The department also invites researchers from other institutions to give talks so the faculty and students are always globally updated on newest results and methods.
Secondly, the math courses provided are really interesting. The professors deliver detailed lectures with informative and helpful remarks, comments, and outside notes. The interaction in the classes is strong too, as the instructors always try to respond to the inquiries as clearly as possible, and the students are always willing to help each other. Thirdly, there are various math programs and contests for undergraduate students to encourage mathematical study. I had memorable times participating in the Problem of The Week program and the Mathematical Competition for University Students in Korea.
I believe that I will maximize my potential while continuing my undergraduate life as a math major student and enjoying the hospitality at KAIST.
